Over the long years that we have been using medicine doctors have always chosen the medicines that were the most effective. Whatever helps the patient the most gets the most use. In the practice of medicine the doctor can see from experience what works and what does not. In this way it has always been the doctor's job to discover IF it works. But it is the job of science to tell us WHY it works.
Homoeopaths across the world have put in thousands and thousands of clinic hours and gained extensive experience of many, many different illnesses, of how they manifest in different people and which homoeopathic medicines (remedies) are best used to treat them. Every day homoeopaths and their patients can see that homoeopathy works. But the exact mechanism in the body where a diluted substance can trigger a healing response has not yet been clearly explained by science.
The science of homoeopathy is based on the principle that “like cures like” first suggested by Hippocrates and then turned into a system of medicine by Samuel hahhnemann 200 years ago. A substance that can cause symptoms can, when given in a dilute form, cure those same symptoms. For example a remedy made from the poison of the honey bee can greatly relieve the pains of arthritis where there are stinging pains in the affected joints and the joints are swollen and red as you would see after a bee sting. And the very best cure for a hangover is a dose of the remedy nux vomica which, in its crude form, can cause terrible headache and nausea.
Paying close attention to the way in which their patients experience different diseases homoeopaths are able to choose the homoeopathic remedy which is best suited to the patient. One of the reasons that homoeopathy is so successful is that the homoeopath does not target the specific disease but rather all of the patient's health problems aiming to raise the patient's level of health until they are literally too healthy to have the disease any more. As problem after problem is dealt with like this homoeopaths tend to see less and less of their patients. It is quite common for a patient in a homoeopathic practice to be more and more healthy with each passing year.
From years of observation individual homoeopaths do have an understanding of how their remedies are helping people but it is not one that has been endorsed by science yet. There is one aspect of homoeopathic medicine however with which science has really come to grips:
One of the controversial things about homoeopathy is the way that the homoeopathic remedies are prepared. All of the substances used as remedies can cause symptoms in their crude form or if too much is taken so, in order to prevent side effects, the remedies are hugely diluted. This is why homoeopathic remedies are so famous for being gentle and safe and free from side effects.
In the past few years there has been very exciting research into how these remedies can still have an effect even when they are so dilute that none of the original substance can be traced in the remedy. It is now known that an electro magnetic “memory” of the molecular structure of the original substance is held in the water through each step of dilution and it is this energetic signature that effects us, stimulateing the body to heal itself.
Having worked as a homoeopath for twenty five years it is particularly exciting for me to see the scientific world opening up to the possibilities of homoeopathy. Every truely new breakthrough in science has been met with resistance as people have to go through the discomfort of adjusting their thinking and it is no different in this case but I, as a homoeopath, am incredibly grateful to scientists such as Jacques Benveniste, Carla Holandino and Nobel prize winner Luc Montagnier for their amazing work.
